Last winter, we watched one of our neighbors lose nearly 40% of his round bale to mud, manure, and trampling. That single bale cost him $145 in our area, so the math got ugly fast. That moment pushed our team to test every hay feeder we could find over six months. The best hay feeders … Read more

I learned the hard way how important a good waterer is the morning I found a heifer standing belly-deep in a frozen stock tank, ears back, refusing to drink. We switched that week. The right automatic waterer pays you back in calmer animals, cleaner water, and an end to hauling buckets in February. This guide … Read more

When the temperature drops below freezing, keeping water available for your animals becomes one of the most frustrating chores on the farm. I have spent years hauling buckets of hot water out to the barn at 5 AM in sub-zero conditions, and I can tell you firsthand that breaking ice off troughs every morning gets … Read more

Last spring, my neighbor’s bull pushed through three T-posts and a stretch of barbed wire in under a minute. I lost my first flock to a raccoon in 2018. It was a hard lesson that taught me why quality poultry netting matters more than almost anything else on a homestead. Since then, our team has spent years testing every type of poultry netting we could find, from electric poultry netting kits to budget chicken … Read more

Last summer I was chasing a stubborn misfire on my old Corvette when a buddy handed me his timing light and said “try this.” Within 20 minutes I had spotted a 4-degree timing error that two shops had missed. That moment sold me on having a quality timing light in your toolbox. After that experience, … Read more

I’ve been milling lumber in my driveway for the better part of a decade, and I can tell you the right chainsaw mill changes everything. The best chainsaw mills turn a log into usable boards without the four-figure cost of a bandsaw mill or the hassle of hauling timber to a sawyer. After testing more … Read more

If you’ve ever stared at a fallen oak and thought “I should mill that,” you’re in good company. Over the past three months, our team tested ten of the top-selling portable sawmills side-by-side on a 40-acre woodlot in Tennessee to find out which ones actually deliver clean, accurate cuts and which ones are all marketing. … Read more
