Picking the right overflow box comes down to three main factors: your tank setup, your flow requirements, and how much installation effort you are willing to invest. Here is what I consider when matching an overflow box to a specific tank.
Internal overflow boxes mount inside the tank, usually integrated into a corner or back panel. They are part of the tank design itself and typically come pre-installed on factory-built reef-ready tanks. The Aqueon Overflow Kit in our list is an example of internal overflow plumbing. These are the most reliable option because there are no siphons to maintain — water simply flows over the weir and down through bulkhead fittings to the sump. The downside is that they take up space inside the tank and can be difficult to clean.
External overflow boxes mount on the outside of the tank, either hung on the rim or bolted through drilled holes. They keep the inside of your display tank cleaner and are popular with rimless tank builds. External boxes like the Eshopps Eclipse and Fiji Cube models in our roundup are the go-to choice for custom builds. They require drilling your tank, but the result is a cleaner look and easier maintenance access.
If your tank is not drilled and you cannot or will not drill it, hang-on-back overflow boxes are your only option. Models like the Blue Ocean 600, CPR CS50, and Eshopps PF-300 hang on the tank rim and use a U-tube siphon to move water. These are easier to install but require monitoring the siphon to prevent failures. Adding an Aqualifter pump is a cheap insurance policy against siphon loss.
Drilled installations are more permanent and more reliable. Any of the external overflow boxes in our list that require drilling — the Eshopps Eclipse, Fiji Cube models, and Xaqua InOut — offer better long-term reliability than hang-on units. Once installed correctly, a drilled overflow will never lose siphon because water flows through bulkhead fittings by gravity alone.
The most important spec to match is the GPH (gallons per hour) rating of the overflow box to your return pump. Your overflow box must be able to handle at least as much flow as your return pump delivers at the head height of your system. I recommend choosing an overflow box rated for 20-30% more flow than your return pump’s actual output. It is easy to set up but not the quietest option. The Herbie overflow uses two drains: one full siphon controlled by a gate valve and one emergency drain. It is much quieter than a Durso and provides backup protection.
The BeanAnimal is the gold standard, using three drains: a full siphon, an open channel, and an emergency drain. It is the quietest and safest configuration. The Eshopps Eclipse is the current slim-profile design with a narrow footprint that sits close to the tank, while the Prodigy was an older, wider box-style overflow. The Eclipse includes a diamond hole saw and installation template, supports backup standpipe configurations, and operates quieter due to its updated drain design. The Prodigy has been largely discontinued in favor of the Eclipse line, which offers better aesthetics and improved noise performance.
An overflow box can be physically too large for your tank if the mounting hardware does not fit the rim or the box extends beyond the tank dimensions. However, in terms of flow rate, having a higher-rated overflow than needed is actually beneficial — it provides headroom and runs quieter because it is not working at maximum capacity. Just make sure the physical dimensions are compatible with your tank before purchasing.
